Home theater Aug 11, 2010 Bought a Bose, and the dvd player would not play half of my dvd's. Plus got to hot I thought they would melt. I returned it and bought the Sony and have been most happy with the sound. As good as Bose and works much better. Costs less too
Music = awesome; Movies = Mind-numbingly poor May 11, 2009 I have had this product as part of my home theatre setup for my family room [which opens into much larger room which is a dining room & kitchen]. To use this system to listen to music is very satisfactory but when we hunker-down to watch a movie, the sound quality, for speech specifically, is just horrible. My young kids are reading well-above grade level because every movie we watch can only be enjoyed with sub-titles on. If you blast the sound on a movie to try to capture the spoken word, then you will be blasted out of the room by the movie's music and sound effects. Conversely, if you turn the sound down to preserve your hearing, you cannot follow the dialogue. I acknowledge that my home's floor plan presents some acoustical challenges, but that does not account for the poor performance of a "home theatre" solution--especailly from Sony.
HDMI output broke twice Jun 24, 2008 The HDMI driver or whatever was repaired once when it was covered by warranty (1yr) but broke again within a couple of months. I get all red or red and white dots now. I wouldn't recommend this or any other sony player with HDMI output. Perhaps they use the same part everywhere. The audio is great and component video works, hence the 3 star.

Cheaper Elsewhere May 05, 2008 5/5/08: I just ordered this from WalMart (online) for $356.54 (it isn't in any of my local stores - you can check on the website). They'll even ship it to your local store for free. I'm not promoting WalMart but I think we should help each other out. Another benefit is, if you hook it up and don't like it, just repack it and bring it to your closest WalMart and get a refund.
Hard to beat.
5/10/08: I was looking for a small AVR for my master bedroom. I didn't want 5.1. Normally we'll just watch TV in there, occassionally a DVD and possibly the radio. We have a full blown home theater in the family room that's used for serious audio/video.
This unit certainly hits the mark for "small". The main unit is unobtrusive and the speakers are small. The subwoofer is a bit on the big side, but aren't they all? We have it tucked away next to a dresser.
Setup was very easy. I only referred to the manual once. I have a high def. cable box connected to it and I have the X1 connected to a Panasonic Plasma TV via the HDMI cable (which isn't supplied by the way). When I powered everyting on it all worked just fine out of the box.
The DVD loaded quickly and the playback was great. The TV is 720p and the DVD I loaded was 480; the X1 did a nice job of upscaling the picture and the audio was awesome (it was StarWars 3, lots of light sabers, things blowing up).
Is it surround sound? Of course not, it only has 2 speakers and a subwoofer. While I was never fooled into thinking the sound was coming from all directions I didn't expect it to. If you're looking for the full surround sound experience, go buy a 5.1 or 7.1 system. If you're looking at the X1 and the Bose 321- give this one a serious look. It's a lot less money (I got it for 350 on WalMart's website) and it sounds great.
A note on the remote. I only used it for a few days and it was OK but not great. I use a Harmony Universal Remote so I just programmed it to handle the X1.
