for future buyer Mar 13, 2010 I used this camera for 4 snorkeling trips. The picture quality is fair. Lithium batteries are highly recommended. The LCD underwater sometimes turns off so you won't see your pictures until out of water. It lasted for 18 months. So as they say cheap sometimes can be expensive at the end. The advantage is that is covered already so no need of case and is easy to shoot & even take videos though this takes away the battery very fast. It's good in the short term.

Don't buy this product Sep 29, 2009 Got 1 day's pictures out of the camera. Never submerged it beyond about 6 inches. Didn't notice the water in it until it wouldn't turn on when we went snorkeling (why we brought the camera) and changed the batteries out when it didn't work.
I'm not an engineer or anything, but the mechanism they use to seal the buttons is crap. Taking apart the camera you will find a heavy TAPE over any electronics near the buttons. They know their mechanism to stop water from getting the body don't work.
Digital zoom is... digital zoom. Terrible picture quality.
Piece. Of. Junk.
As long as you don't put the camera under water, and as long as you don't zoom.. the camera's okay. It's freaking splashproof, not waterproof, and I don't know that I'd even trust it in the rain after my experience. Not that I have to worry about ever using a Vivitar product ever again. It won't happen.

Bahamas Vacation every moment captured!! Sep 22, 2009 This has got to be the bast purchase ever for an underwater adventure (at least in it's price range). My sister and I were able to capture every moment of a vacation above land and under the sea. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for lasting memories snorkeling, para sailing, or scuba diving.

Leaks Aug 26, 2009 I bought this camera in mid June for a family vacation we took in August to Florida. I was looking forward to filming Manatee in the clear waters along the west coast, unfortunately it didn't quite work out.
After getting set up for a close encounter, I stuck the camera under the surface and began to film, when I finished I lifted the camera to see that it had shut off. After drying it off and opening the case in an effort to get it working water poured out. It obviously hasn't worked since, and I spent the rest of my vacation regretting ever buying it.

Great camera for the price Aug 12, 2009 We purchased this camera shortly before our once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Galapagos Islands. The controls were easy to learn, and the ability to switch between still photos and video was wonderful, particularly as the seal wanted to play.
We took along rechargable AA batteries, but never had a problem with battery life during our water excursions, one of which lasted a little over 2 hours. We took a fair mix of both video and still, and the compact flash card worked well. (I used the SanDisk Extreme III cards...note that the camera can't read above 1GB on the card.)
The underwater picture quality was quite good, and while the on-camera flash wasn't strong enough for my deeper-diving husband, it was just fine for me, as I snorkeled around enjoying the underwater beauty. The above-water pictures are also very good - after getting our "dry-land" camera doused once by an errant wave, I started using this nearly anytime we were in a small boat.
The camera itself was relatively small, relatively lightweight, and very reliable. (Size and weight were important given our luggage restrictions.) The case and controls are nearly identical to the SeaLife ReefMaster Mini Underwater Camera, just a better price!
